History Walk

  • Thyme Lechlade, England, GL7 3NX United Kingdom (map)

Explore the fascinating history of Southrop, from pre-Roman times to the present day, with local historian Jerry Hibbert. Uncover the details of St Peter's, the village's 11th-century Saxon church, with its lepers' window and extraordinary font; the Swan Pub, once a bakehouse; and Southrop Manor, valued in the Domesday Book at £15. Learn of its inhabitants including the Danish Earl who bid for the throne, the invading Norman barons, Queen Elizabeth's courtiers, the diplomat who started the East India Company, and one of England's greatest theologians, who shaped the Church of England as we know it today. Finally, discover how significant events and people in British history have affected this tiny village, from the Black Death to the Civil War, from the 18th century dandies, to the Agricultural Riots and the loss of almost the entire male population of Southrop in WWI. Far from dry and dull, a tour around Thyme's medieval buildings serves to shine a light onto England’s chequered history - and brings it to life.
