Thoughtful Design with Edward Bulmer

As the colours of the world start to change day by day, we begin our Thoughtful Design series with Edward Bulmer, partner and founder of Edward Bulmer Natural Paint. Here, he reflects on the philosophy behind the calming, verdant tones of our Meadow Spa.

Take the primary colours yellow and blue, mix them together and you get green. As far back as the early 1800s, German poet, politician and artist Johann Wolfgang von Goethe recognised that this gave green a particularly natural and restful character.

“The beholder has neither the wish nor the power to imagine a state beyond.”

He suggests that green is the pigment equivalent of meditation. Some feel this is because it can only be made up with a coalition of two pigments and is therefore a hue that results only from balance, it is democratic and likely to please a majority of us. Other see that as it predominates in nature, we achieve a further reinforcing harmony by using it to decorate interiors.

However you see it, the possibilities it gives from blue to yellow make it a universal colour that can be depended on to enhance a sense of calm and healing, of rest and nourishment. We see it in constant use by designers and homeowners – selecting both pale and strong versions and often reporting to us that the colour just makes them happy!

Green is my favourite colour. It's not surprising that we have more green than any other colour in our award-winning range, apt for a truly environmentally-friendly paint brand.

Green paint is known to bring the outside in, breathing life and nature into your home at the same time as being both a positive colour and bringing a sense of calm.

The colour green is well documented to be a happy hue, it symbolises nature and the natural world and is believed to represent luck, health, positivity and tranquility.

From the soft greens in the Meadow Spa to more vibrant hues around Thyme, Edward Bulmer Natural Paint’s greens are packed full of the finest earth & mineral pigments. Taking constant inspiration from nature, their plant-based recipe is centered around protecting the planets’ finite resources.
